Volkswagen offers to buy back diesel cars as German bans loom

As the company explains, customers with an eligible vehicle will be able to exchange them for another model if a diesel ban is implemented in their home city or the city where they work. The decision could affect almost 12 million diesel-powered cars.

Diesel auto sales jumped 19 percent in Germany earlier month.

The moves come after a German court ruled last month that cities in the country could ban the most polluting diesel vehicles from their streets.FRANKFURT:Volkswagen will buy back new diesel cars if German cities ban them, it said on Thursday, seeking to reassure potential buyers and stem a plunge in sales of diesel vehicles.

English lawyers are bringing a series of allegations, including that Volkswagen manufacturers defrauded drivers, that "defeat devices" - engine management software created to mask pollution levels - broke European Union rules, that a Volkswagen software fix has caused other problems with cars and that drivers overpaid for vehicles. While diesel cars are heavily criticized for emitting nitrogen oxide, they emit out less Carbon dioxide than gasoline engines.

The Germany Guarantee will apply to all new models bought between April 1st and the end of the year.
