Disaster has struck for Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry, forced off the court against Atlanta with a knee complaint in his comeback game from a serious ankle injury.

The injury occurred when teammate JaVale McGee fell into Curry's left knee after falling on a defensive play late in the third quarter of the Warriors' win over the Atlanta Hawks.

"It is kind of a unusual cruel twist of fate", said Warriors coach Steve Kerr. We'll see how long he has to be out. "We'll keep our fingers crossed".

The Warriors host the Atlanta Hawks at the Oracle Arena, and media reports that Curry has been aiming to return for the game having had his ankle assessed again on Tuesday.

Curry finished with 29 points, showing efficiency from the field (10-of-18), 3-point range (3-of-8) and free-throw line (6-of-6) in 25 minutes after shooting only 1-of-6 in the first quarter.

While Curry is seemingly set to return, Kevin Durant (fractured rib cartilage), Klay Thompson (fractured right thumb) and Draymond Green (pelvic contusion) are out tonight. He missed 11 games earlier this season, then missed another six straight prior to Friday night's game. Curry soon went to locker room with the Warriors' training staff. Backup forward Omri Casspi (not an All-Star) also missed the game with a sprained ankle. "I was just going to block a shot and I ran into him", McGee said.

"Steph looks great", Kerr said after Wednesday's practice, as quoted by ESPN.

This season will mark only the second time in Curry's career in which he doesn't play at least 74 games.

This means one member of the Warriors' Big Four is back in the fold.

Quinn Cook added 13 points and Jordan Bell 12 for the Warriors, who improved to 24-3 in games against Eastern Conference teams this season.
