Waymo to create luxury, self-driving electric car with Jaguar
At a press conference today in New York, Waymo CEO John Krafcik announced the world's first premium electric self-driving auto.
The tie-in will see 20,000 self-driving Jaguar I-Pace SUVs added to Waymo's fleet by 2020, ready for customers to hail.
The Jaguar deal will expand upon a fleet of self-driving cars that Waymo has been gradually building in partnership with Fiat Chrysler since 2015.
He said that they plan to add "20,000 I-PACEs to Waymo's fleet in the next few years".
The new Jaguar I-PACE will be outfitted with Waymo's self-driving technology.
"While we've been focused at Waymo on building the world's most experienced driver, the team at Jaguar Land Rover has developed an all-new battery-electric platform that looks to set a new standard in safety, design and capability", Waymo CEO John Krafcik, who was on hand in NY to reveal the initiative, added.

Putin blames Russia mall fire on 'criminal negligence'
Several protesters visited the local morgue to inspect the dead after Kemerovo's mayor invited them to confirm the death toll. Putin flew to Kemerovo Tuesday as questions swirled about the Kremlin's handling of the country's latest man-made disaster.
On Saturday, Waymo CEO John Krafcik said, "at Waymo, we have a lot of confidence that our technology would be able to handle a situation like that".
The companies said that testing, using the recently launched I-PACE, would commence later this year.
It'll go from 0-60mph in just 4.5 seconds and can be charged from 0-80% capacity in just 50 minutes.
It has been testing fully autonomous vehicles, requiring no human driver, in Arizona since 2017.
Krafcik began the livestream, which you can see above, by telling stories of Waymo riders in Pheonix, including one who witnessed a fatal accident as a youngster, but now takes an autonomous Waymo vehicle to work.
Waymo now tests its self-driving system on Chrysler Pacifica minivans built by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. A woman walking her bicycle across a road in Tempe, Arizona, was struck and killed by an autonomous SUV being tested by the ride-sharing company Uber. Waymo has been operating its test vehicles around Phoenix with no human inside since November past year.
