Chipko stands for "hugging trees" to prevent them from being cutting down. The 1973 movement was inspired by a similar movement in 1730 AD in Rajasthan, says Google's writeup about the significance of the event. "Take some time to hug your favorite tree-hugger in celebration of the Chipko movement!" Nearly right away it extended and spread to other Himalayan districts of the state. The Chipko Movement has been hailed as "Eco-Feminist" since most of the protestors consisted of women. In 1970, widespread floods inundated the area and was attributed to the mismanagement due to commercial logging.

The other reason that angered the villagers was the government's policy that did not allow local agriculturists and herders to cut the trees for fuel wood or for fodder and for certain other purposes. However, a sports manufacturing company was given the permission to fell trees and use them to make equipment, which proved to be the final provocation and a people's movement wasborn. For them, trees provided foliage, food and fuel and were to be used judiciously, and not be casually cut down or cut down in masses.
