White House says Trump still backs age increase to buy certain guns

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday met a bipartisan group of lawmakers to discuss a legislative package on improving school safety and gun control measures.

"I think you're afraid of the NRA", Trump told Sen.

Republican Senator Pat Toomey said on MSNBC that he believed the meeting showed Trump wants to get legislation done.

A co-sponsor of that bill, Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota told the Times. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., doesn't raise the age for buying an AR-15 - like the one used in the Parkland shooting - from 18 to 21, the minimum age for buying a handgun.

"We're not ditching any constitutional protections simply because the last person the president talked to today doesn't like them", he said.

They prefer to consider only modest changes to firearms limits in response to the mass shooting at a Florida high school. By the way, the broken NICS system allowed the Texas church shooter to buy weapons even though he was disqualified from owning a firearm.

Sen. John Cornyn, the second-ranking Republican in the Senate, who attended the bipartisan meeting Trump hosted at the White House Wednesday to come up with ways to combat gun violence, said he would like to start with a bill to bolster the national background check system, The Hill reported on Thursday.

South Africa not seeking quick pitches against Australia
Shaun Marsh survived an lbw appeal on 19, with replays showing he was out after the umpire turned down South Africa's shout. Ever since winning the Test series against India at the end of January, South Africa has looked lacklustre.

Spotify to float on New York Stock Exchange despite haemorrhaging money
Certainly the future for Pandora is bleak, and Spotify didn't do a great job in outlining ways to make money in its F1 filing. Yet there's reason to believe Spotify shares will soar once they begin trading under the ticker symbol SPOT .

Mr Trump also has asked the justice department to develop a regulation that would effectively ban the sale of bump stocks, an accessory used a year ago by a shooter who killed 58 people at a Las Vegas outdoor concert, the deadliest attack by a single gunman in U.S. history.

Trump also raised a few eyebrows when he pushed back on the need for courts to get involved in gun confiscation, saying, "Take the guns first, go through due process second".

That after some Republicans in the room noted that, despite 97% of people wanting universal background checks, they had not been able to get a bill done. "I mean, you can't make someone do it". Five states have such laws, which allow people to request that police confiscate weapons belonging to family members or those close to them who may pose a threat to themselves or others.

An ardent champion of gun rights whose utterances on the subject have been music to the ears of his conservative base, Trump attempted to veer a little bit against the backdrop of the recent Florida school massacre, making the case for raising the minimum age to buy guns, putting in place stringent background checks and taking away firearms from those with mental health issues.

"If people want to offer an amendment to say, ban a particular kind of gun, let's have the vote", Toomey said. "The outcry from high school kids across the country, that's contributed to this discussion as well". Reuters/Mary Beth Koeth Democrats in the meeting appeared heartened by some of Trump's proposals, with Sen.

The president also appeared to back the idea of allowing police to temporarily seize guns from people reported to be unsafe, even without a court order. "The reason that nothing's gotten done here is because the gun lobby has had a veto power over any legislation that comes before Congress".

Trump repeatedly called for a "comprehensive" bill on gun control during the meeting, asking if various elements could be added to existing proposals.
