- A North Texas woman was sentenced to five years in prison for voting illegally in the 2016 presidential election.
Crystal Mason, 43, testified in court that she did not know that she was ineligible to vote due to her 2011 fraud conviction before casting a provisional ballot in the presidential election.
Still, after the 2016 general election, President Trump assembled a now-defunct "voter fraud commission" amid his baseless claims that millions of people voted illegally. She was given an affidavit by a judge that stated a voter must have completed a full sentence to vote if convicted of a felony. My son is about to graduate.
J. Warren St. John, Mason's defense attorney, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that an appeal has already been filed. St. John said federal court had not yet issued a warrant over the violation, however. Mason has worked to restart her life after getting released from prison, St. John said, getting a job with the Texas Department of Transportation, then getting a degree from beauty school and becoming self-employed. She previously operated a tax business and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the government for inflating her clients' tax refunds. On her previous charges, she said, "I inflated returns". Mason says she hadn't even wanted to vote, but her mom had talked her into it, per the Washington Post.
According to the prosecutor in the case, Mason was well aware that she was not allowed to vote in 2016. I admitted that. I owned up to that. "I'd never do that again".
"I was happy enough to come home and see my daughter graduate".

Mason was taken to jail after the conclusion of her trial on Wednesday as a chorus of small children leaving the courtroom waved and said, "Bye-bye, Big Mama". He noted that Mason went to the same polling place where she'd always voted, and used a legitimate driver's license and address.
Crystal Mason was convicted in 2011 of felony tax fraud.
She had gone to vote at her mother's insistence and brought her driver's license as identification, according to her testimony.
In February 2017, another woman in Tarrant County, a Mexican national with a green card, was sentenced to eight years in prison after falsely claiming to be a USA citizen on her ballot.
