World's Largest Airplane Readies For Flight
Created to assist payloads of around 250,000kg reach low Earth orbit (LEO), Stratolaunch is a composite aircraft powered by six Pratt & Whitney PW4056 engines. It is conducting taxi tests at the Mojave Air and Space Port, reports Popular Mechanics.
On Twitter, he wrote: 'Captured new video of @Stratolaunch plane as it reached a top taxi speed of 40 knots (46 mph) with all flight surfaces in place on Sunday.
Stratolaunch, the world's biggest plane ever built is formed by two main bodies and it will be able to launch up to three rockets to space from an altitude of over 11,000 meters.
With a cargo capacity of up to 250 tons, the 230-ton Stratolaunch is created to carry up to three small rockets to the stratosphere, where it will drop the rockets for aerial purposes to a low orbit around the Earth.
The key test will be the first flight next year. The project was officially announced in December 2011.
Since it was unveiled in June 2017, the Stratolaunch has undergone a series of tests before it makes its first flight in 2019.

The Stratolaunch is created to carry rockets between its two fuselages. The dual-fuselage plane was built by California aerospace company Scaled Composites, which won the Ansari X prize in 2004 with their SpaceShipOne, a reusable rocket-powered airplane.
But his vision is different from what Elon Musk's SpaceX, Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic and other companies have for building commercial highways to space.
Allen's team instead turned to Orbital ATK, which will sell off-the-shelf Pegasus XL air-launch vehicles capable of delivering 1,000lb satellites into low-Earth orbit. Bezos is developing low-priced, reusable rockets with the goal of moving energy-intensive, heavy industry off Earth.
Funded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen who believes that once it is ready, it will act as a cheap way to launch satellites into space.
Company spokesperson Steve Lombardi confirmed in November that the Stratolaunch was in the "early stage" of a propulsion development project that required use of the NASA test stand. Its "quick and precise satellite positioning" is touted as one of Stratolaunch's most revolutionary features.
