Not everyone is being affected, but enough are running into issues that it seems incredibly risky to continue using a third-party dock at this point, even if you haven't had issues yet yourself.
These issues aren't new to the latest software, though; the main Nintendo Switch Reddit regularly sees PSAs from people encouraging others to avoid their fate (and lost game saves) by steering clear of these off-brand docks. While we're big fans of third-party peripherals here at Tom's Guide, we love our Switches more, and we'd hate for yours to burn out until third-party dock makers ensure the safety of the consoles they support.
It's unclear what exactly is causing these issues, but the reports increased considerably following the release of the 5.0 firmware update earlier this month. The Nyko dock, for example, allows users to charge their Switch without having the screen obstructed like it is with the OEM docking station. Some Switch devices permanently stop recharging, while others get stuck in a boot loop or go blank and are bricked completely after being used with them.
For now, it is unknown if the third-party docks or the firmware version 5.0 is the cause of the problems that bricked several Switch units. Whether it comes down to convenience ("I want a dock for upstairs") or necessity ("my original dock doesn't work"), the reasons are often the same: the official Nintendo product is surprisingly expensive, going for £80 on the Nintendo store.

Chinese streaming company iQiyi prices IPO at $18 per share
Launched on April 22, 2010, as Qiyi, the company received investment funds from Baidu and Providence Equity Partners. Shares for the largely unprofitable company were down 3%, near 17.35 during midday trading on the stock market today.
Nyko is a third-party accessory maker that offers an alternative dock to Switch owners.
"Unlicensed products and accessories do not undergo Nintendo's testing and evaluation process", the company said. Therefore, the Japanese game company argued, it's possible that some units could have "compatibility problems" that would negatively affect players. One of the third-party manufacturers, Nyko told Kotaku that it is "aware of the issue", speculating that it might be related to how the Switch handles its audio visual output to an external display. The company said that it's working on a solution.
As of the system's recent 5.0 firmware update, reports of Switch users losing their data including that of save files began to crop up.
