While just the first of what he hopes to be 30 starts in 2018 - Giolito's goal is to pitch 200 innings this season - this was a fairly big moment for the 23-year-old, 6-6 hurler after making his first opening day roster as the No. 2 starter in the Sox rotation.

Avisail Garcia followed with a single, Jose Abreu grounded into a fielder's choice, and Davidson drew a walk before Castillo's two-run liner to right field made it 4-3.

Kennedy handed to Justin Grimm, who struck out two and worked around a hit in the seventh, but Brandon Maurer (0-1) blew the lead in the eighth. Danny Farquhar (1-0) picked up the win in relief, Nate Jones earned a hold and Joakim Soria nabbed the save against his former team.

"[But] it was a tough night [for the bullpen]".
