The network handed out two straight-to-series orders for dramas "The Rookie", starring Nathan Fillion, and "Take Two", starring Rachel Bilson. And joining them will be AJ Michalka's Lainey Lewis, who was formerly Erica Goldberg's best friend and Troy Goldberg's girlfriend. She still recurs in the now airing fifth season. The series is slated for 2018-2019.
In January, ABC aired the pilot as a special Goldbergs episode called "The Goldbergs: 1990-Something". That reworked premise, plus solid ratings for the January episode (1.7 in adults 18-49, 6 million viewers), helped land the spinoff a series pickup. It was the highest-rated episode of the season at that point.
Based on the childhood of creator Adam F. Goldberg, the series follows "a young Adam as he and his eccentric family try to get by in the wonderland we know as the 1980's". The series is from Sony Pictures Television and ABC Studios.
The spinoff initially filmed a pilot for consideration previous year, but ABC passed. "It's really weird to us. And I wanted to wish a positive show where it's not having teachers being down in the teachers lounge smoking cigarettes". "It had a diverse cast they were looking for, and it had two of the most popular characters from its No. 2 show".

Sean Giambrone stars as Adam, alongside Jeff Garlin as his father and Wendi McLendon-Covey as his mom. However, a "backdoor pilot" aired as a Goldbergs episode earlier this year and was well received.
