For the second time in two years, Craig Pouncey, the Jefferson County Schools superintendent, fell short of the votes needed to be the next K-12 schools chief.
"I believe Dr. Mackey will serve us well and we will see forward thinking results", she said. He will start his new job May 14. Hoover City Schools Superintendent Kathy Murphy didn't receive any votes.
Director of Communications Michael Sibley asked each candidate the same nine questions, covering everything from academic standards to how to ensure schools have adequate funding.
A search firm whittled a field of more than 40 applicants to seven semifinalists, who were voted by the board down to the finalists.
The state school board spent about an hour interviewing each of the finalists today before rating them and voting on a top pick with ballots. The other four - Ella Bell, Stephanie Bell, Yvette Richardson and Jackie Zeigler - named Pouncey as their top choice.
