France's most noteworthy authoritative court has denied a French citizenship to an Algerian Muslim who declined to shake hands with authorities amid her citizenship function.

A woman was denied a French passport after refusing to shake hands with high-profile French municipal officials at a formal citizenship ceremony in the city of Isere, South-Eastern France.

The government refused her naturalisation, saying she was "not assimilated" for denying the symbolic ritual.

She appealed, but France's highest administrative court upheld the ruling.
