Amazon launches a 'lite' Android web browser app in India
Amazon has silently launched a new "lite" web browser for emerging markets, with the browser visible and downloadable on some smartphones in India to start with.
"Internet" is also a different app from Amazon's existing browser Silk, which uses a split architecture where some of the processing is performed on Amazon's servers to improve webpage loading performance. The US-based company also offers a Kindle Lite app in India. While Amazon has not made any public announcement of the app yet, it is available to download on the Google Play Store for devices running Android 5.0 and higher. Amazon is hoping that people download this app instead of other browsers which range from 21MB to 50MB in size and they are also billing it as "private", as it doesn't ask for extra permissions or collect private data. The app went live in Google Play Store in March, but Amazon never publicly announced the product, so it went unnoticed until TechCrunch spotted it. It also doesn't have that many downloads. It now has only a few 100 something downloads not even reaching the 1000 mark. Smartphones like Xiaomi Redmi Note 5, Oppo A83, Honor 9 Lite are not compatible with this web browser. ★ Browse the web with private tabs. Amazon assures that the browsing on the private tabs will not be tracked or collected as the data isn't recorded on the device. The data-friendly Android version of Kindle with file size 2 MB can work even in low speed on 2G/3G networks. Oddly, Amazon's other browser, Silk, for Fire tablets, which are sold in India, isn't yet available in the Amazon Appstore in India.
