China hits US sorghum with anti-dumping measure

Last week, Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed to open the Chinese economy and reduce some import tariffs, including on cars, in a speech seen as an attempt at averting an all-out trade war. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said an initial investigation found that imported sorghum from the US, which is used in China for animal feed, brewing and energy processing, was being dumped in the country and harming the domestic industry. The not-so-good news is that "China will likely cool further in the coming months as Beijing's policy restrictions are starting to bite".

Due to the same reason, China Zhongwang Holdings Limited, an aluminum product manufacturer listed in Hong Kong, also failed to merge USA aluminum firm Aleris Corporation, although afterward the US government announced a 10-percent tariff on imported aluminum products, claiming to force foreign companies to build plants in the United States and bring jobs back.
A Geneva-based trade official said that the move was an expected, but not mandatory, step that buys Washington time to flesh out its differences with Beijing.
He also thinks the USA has an advantage in a trade fight with China. It said importers must post bonds of 178.6 percent of the value of their goods to cover possible anti-dumping duties while the probe is completed.

That's all part of the plan though, as policy makers have been signaling that they're prepared to pay a price in headline performance in order to clean up the parts of the economy that are clearly unsustainable.
Analysts said the main beneficiaries, at least in the short term, would be manufacturers focused on new-energy vehicles, including US electric carmaker Tesla, which has been seeking to set up its own plant in Shanghai. "It provides a good window to address some structural issues, especially deleveraging".
