The International Computer Science Institute published the study, titled 'Won't Somebody Think of the Children?' Examining COPPA Compliance at Scale, detailing that 3,337 applications could be breaking the US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) through illegally tracking the data of minors. Incidentally, concerns of COPPA violation were also flagged against YouTube earlier this month, which is owned by Google. Children's apps have a different standard because of COPPA, and typically aren't allowed to track data without explicit parental consent.
While everyone's in an uproar about Facebook accounts getting skimmed for data, a new study claims that thousands of Android apps are in breach of standards for monitoring kids' behavior online.
This latest study analyzed 5.855 apps targeted at kids, and each of them had an average download of 750,000 times.
According to the mobile app industry, on April 15, the FTC is now conducting a survey of Korean mobile game developers and distributorson fair trade on mobile game distribution platforms.
These numbers don't come as a surprise, as we've seen several phones get updated to Android Oreo in the last couple of months while many more devices were launched with Android Nougat in tow.

Up to 235 apps were accessing the phone's Global Positioning System data - 184 of which transmitted the device's location to advertisers, according to the study.
