"Dr. Martin Luther King could be effective and he could be articulate, but at the same time it was meaningful". Stunned, Brooks dropped everything and drove to Memphis, crying all the way.

The members of King's tight circle barely paused to grieve. A wreath marks where King was standing when struck. Others returned to the pulpit, preaching a gospel of racial liberation.

And the King legacy continues, evident today in a new generation protesting numerous same issues King confronted: inequality, police brutality and poverty.

"The struggle continues. We still have a lot of injustice - 50 years later, we're still fighting racism, still fighting to maintain and exercise our vote", said Forte, a retired Chicago Public Schools teacher.

Even so, the problems persist.

The city's role in the civil rights movement and King's death has long made it a destination for anyone interested in King's legacy. Eggleton says. "Buddhist people, who hear this message, or Muslim or whoever".

After King's assassination, the eyes of the world focused on Memphis and forced then Mayor Henry Loeb to recognize the American Federation of State, County Municipal Employees, or AFSCME, which represented the sanitation workers.

Now 72, Brooks does advocacy work around the same 1946 quadruple lynching he was pursuing 50 years ago. One student wrote, "Today we have to be more vigilant than ever before in protecting our character in the face of oppression".

Where was King going when he was killed? He said his dramatic approach, aimed at seizing media attention and the national spotlight, came from King's playbook.

"King knew how to deal with movement theater and we had to recreate that", said Sharpton, 63. I was angry at white people because I felt like they were responsible at the time. While Lewis has seen activism like the "March for Our Lives" rally in Washington D.C. he said he may never see another leader like Martin Luther King Jr. - again.
