French support of Syrian Kurds 'a bow to the US not change of guard,' say analysts
Facing a push for deep reforms by President Emmanuel Macron targeting the public sector and businesses, French unions kick off a wave of strikes Tuesday that analysts say will test how much weight they still carry. Thello offered refunds and apologies to travellers.
Three out of 4 Eurostar trains to London and Belgium are expected to run, as are most Thalys trains to Belgium and the Netherlands, but almost all trains to Spain, Italy and Switzerland are expected to come to a halt. The company posted a message on its website urging travellers whose trains are still running to arrive an hour early.
Eurostar has cancelled 29 services between Britain, France and Belgium this week, its website said, even though it is not directly involved in the dispute.
The airline says today's strike is expected to ground 30% of its long-haul flights out of Paris's Charles de Gaulle airport. While not linked to Macron's reforms, Air France walkouts are also planned for April 7, 10, 11.

The government wants to move to make the rail company (SNCF) "internationally competitive", which for a company with €45bn could mean an end to jobs for life, layoffs, smaller pay and a higher age of retirement. The strikes are against the French government's plan that some workers' benefits are taken away and the national railway company restructured.
But by taking on the SNCF, a totem of French unionism, Macron has inevitably drawn comparisons to a previous turning point in Europe's industrial relations: Margaret Thatcher's showdown with British coal mine unions in 1984.
Public opinion has sided with the government so far but an Ifop survey on Sunday showed 46 per cent backed the SNCF strike, up four points from two weeks ago. "Or the ambitious young president determined to turn a page?"
