DFB Pokal Semi-final report Bayer Leverkusen v Bayern Munich 17 April 2018

Bayern Munich progressed to the final of the DFB Pokal Cup after thrashing Bayer Leverkusen 6-2 on Tuesday night.

Bayern keeper Sven Ulreich repeatedly came to the rescue to keep the visitors ahead and the home side's hopes of a comeback in the semi-final were killed off when Thiago Alcantara picked out Mueller to score Bayern's third.

Heiko Herrlich's men initially produced a good response to falling two goals down early on, but Bayern ultimately blew Leverkusen away, with Muller scoring a hat-trick in a remarkably comfortable win at the BayArena.

"We really deserved it, the team performance was great".

Bayern has won the competition a record 18 times, but only once in the last three seasons, and it will look to return to the final at the expense of Leverkusen, which is seeking its second title and first since 1993.

"We were very effective and the team worked really well together", beamed Mueller after Bayern's masterclass in attacking football.

Muller was ruthless in the second half - first poking home a fine Thiago Alcantara pass before deflecting an Arjen Robben shot for his second.

Jamaica winger Leon Bailey, a second-half replacement, pulled a goal back for Leverkusen with a stunning free-kick on 72 minutes.

Bayern however weren't done with the scoring as Thomas Mueller sealed his hat rick to secure the berth for the German Cup final in Berlin on May 19. Bayern, which eased to the league title with five rounds remaining, will face Schalke or Eintracht Frankfurt - who meet in the other semifinal on Wednesday - in the German season-ending showpiece in Berlin's Olympiastadion on May 19.

Mueller was cheered off by visiting Munich fans when he made way for James Rodriguez on 80 minutes.

"When we play like we did today, it will even be hard for Real", added Ulreich as Bayern eye a repeat of their 2013 treble. "We were motivated and focused", Bayern's coach Jupp Heynckes said.
