What's the most important trait Colorado Springs School District 11 teachers, other staff, parents, students and community members would like to see in a new superintendent?

To account for the deficit brought on by additional security spending, the district asked school leaders to propose 1% cuts.

Sarasota County plans to follow in the footsteps of larger Florida districts that have used this model for years.

The base salaries for school principals are now $102,315 at the elementary schools, $108,613 for the middle school and $122,187 for the high school.

Graff wrote that the district might reduce funding for centrally funded services such as transportation, athletics, custodial support, placement, payroll, curriculum and instruction and safety and security.

These positions will now focus on supporting schools in dealing with trauma.

The raise will cost the district an estimated $800,000 annually. It would also fund upgrades to technology at the schools, and allow district students to continue attending BOCES classes, Heidenreich said. "It is a more cost-effective alternative while having armed, uniformed police in the school district". A two-year agreement would be considered the following year, according to the offer.

Each speaker had a limited amount of time to make their points and list their priorities.

Mathews High School teacher Rachel Morris said that she and her husband Brent felt that their voices had "barely been acknowledged by supervisors".

Those employees will patrol the district's 22 elementary schools, which have not had full-time school resource officers since the Great Recession. He said the salary issues should be discussed throughout the year so the School Board is fully informed at contract negotiations. They will receive free health insurance through the district and will be categorized as classified employees. The budget recommendations a year ago would have seen 28 positions cut, however, trustees chose to cut 23 based on enrolment and have salary for five full-time equivalent staff given to the department.

Lavarello predicted that one of the district's biggest challenges may be hiring that many employees in such a short time.

"I think it's just how items were budgeted in the past frankly", Willis said. Is this really the best time to do that?

The BOE will meet with County Commissioners Monday at noon. The state agency's spokesperson did not say how long that process could take. But that certification will have to be attained once more.

The district's board of education hired the consultant to help find a replacement for Nicholas Gledich, who announced in mid-February that after nine years in the job, he will retire June 30.

Elementary school teacher Amy Ashberry said she's in her 10th year of teaching and is making less than when she started.
