No Arrest Shield For Union Minister's Son Wanted For Bihar Violence
Arijit, the son of Union minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey, was produced in the Bhagalpur district court by the Bihar Police on Sunday hours after his dramatic surrender.
As pressure grew on the Nitish Kumar government to crack down, the Chief Minister is learnt to have negotiated with the BJP that Arijit Shashwat would be given an opportunity to seek anticipatory bail but would be arrested if the court didn't pass orders to protect him from arrest.
"The FIR filed against my son is nothing but a piece of garbage which was registered by corrupt officers of the area.my son has made no mistake...is chanting Bharat Mata ki Jai and Vande Mataram is a crime in the country?", asked Mr. Choubey. Son Arijit Shashwat had also refused to surrender, arguing that he would follow "whatever court says". As he was being taken away, Arijit told reporters that he will provide evidence of his innocence.
Choubey, who is the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in the Modi government, maintained that his son is innocent. However, Shashwat said he would approach higher courts and alleged that the FIR against him was "totally fake". "He surrendered immediately after he was denied bail", she said.

Although a five-member special police team has been constituted to arrest Shashwat, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, it is yet to make any breakthrough. 'We had got information of his whereabouts and began our surveillance. On March 26, Mr. Shashwat had moved an anticipatory bail application against an arrest warrant issued against him by a local court.
The 36-year-old BJP leader surrendered to the police around 2 am on Sunday at a temple in Patna in the presence of a huge crowd of his supporters and the media.
Last week, a case was lodged against Shashwat for taking out a procession without prior permission, inciting communal passion and roaming on the streets with arms in Bhagalpur.
