Bono was awarded the inaugural George W. Bush Medal for Distinguished Leadership Thursday, with the former president honoring the U2 singer for his work in combatting the HIV/AIDS crisis and poverty in Africa. The medal is meant to become an annual award, given to an individual who creates change in the world.
The singer credited Bush's action in funding the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief and the Global relief fund with saving "probably 21 million lives", Rolling Stone reported.
"It's a huge honour to win this award, and I'm here to honor your leadership on the greatest health intervention in the history of medicine", Bono told Bush during the live-streamed ceremony in Dallas.
"Coming here at this time, with loss of your mum, I can feel her spirit in this", Bono said. "This is a guy who's got a huge heart". The Bush Centre posted a seven-minute video featuring the pair in conversation, in which Bush welcomes Bono to the centre.

Bono also praised the ONE campaign and the American taxpayers for their help. "Well, I was going to toast your courage for the work you've done on HIV/AIDS, but maybe you should be toasted for the courage of giving this to me".
