Parts of the silver treasures found in northern Germany which may have belonged to the legendary Danish king Harald Bluetooth who brought Christianity to Denmark
Rene Schoen and his student Luca Malaschnitschenko were looking for treasure using metal detectors in January on northern Ruegen island when they chanced upon what they initially thought was a worthless piece of aluminium.
Archaeologists said about 100 of the silver coins are probably from the reign of Harald Gormsson, better known as "Harald Bluetooth", who lived in the 10th century and introduced Christianity to Denmark. However, when they cleaned it, they understood it was more precious. As it turned out, was shining not a piece of foil, and the product of silver.
Harald Bluetooth. "This treasure is the largest single find of Bluetooth coins in the southern Baltic Sea area and thus of outstanding importance", said excavation leader Michael Schirren of the German State Office for Culture and Historic Preservation.
The state archaeology office became involved and the amateur archeologists were asked to keep the find a secret until professionals could plan the major dig. They are associated with the era of the Danish king Harald Gormsen, reports The Associated Press.
Towards the end of his life, Bluetooth's son Sweyn Forkbeard rebelled against his father and took the throne, while Bluetooth fled to Pomerania - northeast Germany on the Baltic sea - where he died a year or so later. This is because of his impeccable communication skills which helped him unite modern-day Norway, Germany, Sweden and Denmark.

"We have here a rare case, when a discovery seems to be related to historical sources", says the chief archaeologist of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Detlef Jantzen.
The technology, developed to wirelessly link computers with cellular devices, was named after Bluetooth because of his knack for unification.
The technology logo carries the runic letters for his initials HB.
