'Salisbury attack hasn't changed editorial approach': RT says amid new OFCOM probes

Ofcom said it had received complaints about RT content in the wake of a nerve agent attack on former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal in March in the British city of Salisbury.

Ofcom said that, until recently, TV Novosti's "overall compliance record has not been materially out of line with other broadcasters".

A spokesperson for Ofcom said "we have observed a significant increase in the number of programmes that warrant investigation".

Britain says Russian Federation poisoned the Skripals with a military-grade nerve agent on March 4.

Following a March parliamentary debate in which Theresa May announced sanctions against Russian Federation, during which a number of MPs called for the channel to be taken off air, RT said it was "regrettable" that it risked being "sacrificed as a political pawn, in one fell swoop doing away with any concept of press freedom in the UK".

In accordance with our normal procedures, we will make the outcome of these investigations public as soon as possible.

Ofcom record a "significant increase" in broadcasts that potentially breach broadcasting rules, since events in Salisbury.

Labour MP Stephen Doughty added: "On Russia Today, can I urge the Prime Minister to speak with the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport to look at reviewing Russia Today's broadcasting licence, and to speak to the House authorities about blocking their broadcasts in this building itself".

Media regulator Ofcom warned on April 18 that TV Novosti, the company which produces RT, could lose its British broadcasting rights if it failed its "fit-and-proper" test.

Channel's future in doubt in the United Kingdom as Ofcom consider whether the channel is "fit and proper" to retain its license.

Ofcom has the power to impose fines or revoke RT's license if it finds that the channel broke broadcasting standards on impartiality and fairness.

Ofcom also confirmed it is investigating "audience tweets" in The Alex Salmond Show on RT, which it said it had "provisionally found were not from audience members".

RT said the channel had not changed their output since the events in Salisbury.

In December, Ofcom announced it was examining whether The Alex Salmond Show had broken rules on "due accuracy" after questions were raised over whether the Tweets were genuine.

The seven new investigations are further to an existing probe relating to former First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond's chat show and "audience tweets" used during the programme.
