CAF vice president arrested in Congo in corruption probe

Omari who is the president of the DR Congo Football Association (Fecofa) has been taken into custody and is now being questioned about his role in the embezzlement of $1 million.

Constant Omari was detained on Tuesday in an embezzlement probe.

The quartet are being questioned over $1 million that was requested from the country's sports ministry to pay for matches involving the DR Congo national side and club teams competing in continental competition.

Luzolo Bambi, DR Congo President Joseph Kabila's special adviser on corruption, reportedly ordered the arrest of the four officials.

The government official is sports ministry secretary-general Barthelemy Okito. They are being held at the public prosecutor's office in Kinshasa.

The other two arrested from FECOFA are second vice-president Theobald Binamungu and financial chief Roger Bondembe.

Bambi's office also said a fifth person wanted for questioning, the president of the Congo Olympic committee, is on the run.

Omari is also a vice-president of the African Football Confederation and has been a member of FIFA's all-powerful Council since 2015.

The Congolese league suspended all games until further notice in reaction to the arrests and in a show of "solidarity" with Omari and the two other federation officials.

In a statement, the league said the four had been "humiliated and deprived of their liberty".
