In the wake of the back-and-forth, Bloomberg is now reporting that the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) has since opened up an investigation into working conditions at Tesla's Fremont factory in California.
The probe comes a matter of days after a damning report on injuries at Tesla was published by the Centre for Investigative Reporting. Most relevant to Cal/OSHA's probe, the report claimed that Tesla underreports workplace injuries and illnesses.
California requires employers to electronically submit what it calls Log 300 records of injuries and illnesses. The article described Tesla's Fremont factory in California as one in which "style and speed trumped safety", and one where superstar CEO Elon Musk's dislike for the colour yellow - which is traditionally used to mark hazardous areas - leads to a less safe work environment. Nearly in the same vein it also takes pretty seriously the allegations of employers' underreporting recordable work-related illnesses and injuries as well. Monterroza added that the agency will check to see if serious injuries were reported directly to Cal/OSHA within eight hours, as required by law.

Tesla was characteristically quick to respond, posting to its blog the same day. "However, there should be absolutely no question that we care deeply about the well-being of our employees and that we try our absolute hardest to do the right thing and to fail less often".
Late on Tuesday, California's Division of Occupational Safety and Health, known as CAL/OSHA, opened its inspection and investigations can be triggered by a number of reasons, including internal complaints from employees.
Cal/OSHA's investigation will include a review of Tesla's Log 300, a log of work-related injuries and illnesses, according to the agency's spokesperson Erika Monterroza.
Tesla said in its statement, "Cal-OSHA is required to investigate any claims that are made, regardless of whether they have merit or are baseless (as we believe these are), and we always provide our full cooperation".
