Campaign urges Israel soldiers to refuse to shoot unarmed Palestinians

Terror march

The Israel Defense Forces denied reports that the suspects had shot at Israeli equipment or troops.

The calls come after a mass protest along the Gaza border last Friday that led to clashes with Israeli forces, who killed 17 Palestinians.

Palestinians torched tires near Gaza's border with Israel on Friday, sending huge plumes of black smoke into the air and drawing tear gas and live fire from Israeli soldiers deployed on the other side of the border fence. Demonstrations and protests must be allowed to proceed in a peaceful manner.

The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) has stationed sharpshooters to deter Palestinians from trying to cross or tamper with border fencing.

Palestine solidarity and anti-Israeli protest rallies were also waged in major Canadian city of Vancouver, where hundreds of protesters marched for hours across the city center, waving signs and shouting slogans condemning Israeli atrocities against Palestinian protesters and calling for a free Palestine.

But rights groups have harshly criticised Israeli soldiers' actions, and Palestinians say protesters are being shot while posing no threat to troops.

Israel argues that Hamas could have ended the suffering of Gaza's 2 million people by disarming and renouncing violence.

For a second Friday, thousands of protesters gathered at five sites along the 65km-long (40-mile) Israel-Gaza border. "The circumstances in which journalists were hit, allegedly by IDF fire, are unknown to us and are being examined".

Israel said there were also attempts to lob rudimentary explosives and damage or penetrate the border fence, as well as a pair of militants who shot at soldiers.

The report further referred to concerns by the Israeli army sources that in case of many Palestinian casualties, the global community might renew diplomatic pressure on the regime.

Many demonstrators stayed far back from the border fence, picnicking in the barley fields and holding a tent camp sit-in, but some young Palestinians burned tires and threw rocks toward the fence.

A Human Rights Watch report alleged that the IDF used "lethal force outside of life-threatening situations in violation of worldwide norms", and accused the Israeli government of giving orders that all but guarenteed casualties. On Thursday, President Donald Trump's Middle East peace envoy Jason Greenblatt condemned Palestinian leaders "who call for violence or who send protesters-including children-to the fence, knowing that they may be injured or killed".

The "March of Return" is set to climax on May 15, when Israel will mark 70 years of independence - a day Palestinians mark as the "nakba" ("catastrophe" in Arabic) - and the United States will cut the ribbon on its controversial new embassy in Jerusalem.
