Humboldt mayor Rob Munch said the tragedy had been overwhelming for the town of about 6,000 people. "We're a small community, some of those kids have been on the team for a number of years".

In communities across rural Saskatchewan, such hockey venues are important focal points for locals, whether it be parents chatting in the stands during their children's early morning practices, fans gathering to cheer on their local champions, or adult part-timers squeezing in a friendly game after work. Multiple crisis workers were assisting in a separate area.

The team included 24 players from western Canada, all aged between 16 and 21.

"Our thoughts are with the players, families, coaches, team management and all those throughout the community who have been affected by the tragedy involving the Humboldt Broncos hockey team", said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.

"We are so sorry for the loss of the members of the team".
