Some names of those killed have already been confirmed, they include Logan Boulet, Broncos head coach Darcy Haugan, team captain Logan Schatz, top forward Jaxon Joseph and the team's play-by-play radio announcer Tyler Bieber.

He estimated 300 to 400 people had gathered at the complex Friday evening to support each other.

The driver of the truck was not injured, the RCMP said.

At 3:00-pm Saturday, updated information was relayed stating 15 deaths had been confirmed with 14 injured - several of the injured are in critical condition.

He has received condolence calls from other world leaders, including US President Donald Trump.

There were 29 people on the team's bus when the crash happened around 17:00 local time (23:00 GMT) on Friday. "It's a terrible accident, my God", Opp told the news agency. "I'll always remember you and who you were will influence me for the rest of my life", he said on Instagram.

Aerial footage showed the bus on its side, its roof peeled back and its front end destroyed.

On Friday night, more than a hundred people packed the Apostolic Church in Nipawin, where the Broncos had been scheduled to play, awaiting word from the accident, the Globe and Mail reported. Tributes poured in online for the father of two young sons, who was described as an fantastic mentor to players.

STARS air ambulance said it sent three helicopters to the scene.

Lane Hodnefield and Patrick Janex, both first-time blood donors, said those involved in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash inspired their donations.

Also feeling the pain of the tragedy was Rhonda Clarke Tobin, believed to be the mother of another teenager who survived the crash.

Humboldt mayor Rob Munch said the tragedy had been overwhelming for the town of about 6,000 people. "We're a small community, some of those kids have been on the team for a number of years".

In communities across rural Saskatchewan, such hockey venues are important focal points for locals, whether it be parents chatting in the stands during their children's early morning practices, fans gathering to cheer on their local champions, or adult part-timers squeezing in a friendly game after work. Multiple crisis workers were assisting in a separate area.

"Everybody is just so devastated".

"Mark was in his element in the hockey arena and I could think of no better mentor for junior hockey players to have than Mark Cross".

The team included 24 players from western Canada, all aged between 16 and 21.

"Our thoughts are with the players, families, coaches, team management and all those throughout the community who have been affected by the tragedy involving the Humboldt Broncos hockey team", said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.

"We are so sorry for the loss of the members of the team".
