'Underestimating the Opposition,' Trudeau Doubles Down on Kinder Morgan Pipeline Push

The prime minister has insisted the pipeline will be built; Alberta premier Notley is four-square behind TMX.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau plans to start talks with Kinder Morgan Inc to backstop the Trans Mountain pipeline after failing to end a spat between Canadian provinces that put the vital project at risk.

The Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce polled its members back in 2015 on whether they support the pipeline project, and 83 per cent said yes, said chamber president Jack Nicholson.

Ball says the project should go ahead, aligning himself with the Trudeau and Notley against the concerns raised by Horgan.

The B.C. TMX opposition can appeal to constitutional authority, mobilize climate justice activists, and deliver a serious blow to the re-election of any elected official who sides with the Texans against Indigenous rights.

"Today in the meeting, one of the things we discussed was the fact that the federal government, along with the Government of Alberta, has commenced discussions with Kinder Morgan to establish a financial relationship that will eliminate investor risk", Notley said.

The uncertainty looming over trade relations between Canada and the U.S. as well as waning investor confidence in Canada's ability to complete big projects reinforce why this expansion needs to go forward, he added. Alberta, after all, has introduced legislation empowering the NDP to restrict the flow of oil to B.C., which would cause gas prices to spike on the Lower Mainland.

At the press conference after the meeting, Trudeau said: "This is a series of discussions that are happening in Calgary, in Toronto, in Houston and NY".

However, he added: "This statement of regret can not be easily dismissed and disparaged by Commonwealth heads of government". Strict anti-gay laws remain in place in countries like Nigeria, Uganda, Malawi and elsewhere across the continent.

Horgan came and went with nothing to show for the trip, except an opportunity to say there what he has said here. "It was a collegial meeting among peers".

The service also said it had appointed a special prosecutor in the cases of Green party Leader Elizabeth May and New Democrat MP Kennedy Stewart, both arrested at the site.

"We are actively pursuing legislative options that will assert and reinforce the government of Canada's jurisdiction in this matter", Trudeau also said.

In response to the Kinder Morgan ultimatum, B.C. Premier John Horgan indicated that the interests of British Columbians, and Canadians, had to come before the interests of Texas boardrooms.

In a statement on Sunday, the group detailed the growing opposition to the project, noting that critics include: the Province of British Columbia; the state of Washington; the cities of Vancouver, Burnaby, and Victoria; 19 other B.C. municipalities; 250,000 petition signers; and more than 24,000 who have pledged to do "whatever it takes" to stop the project.

The B.C. attorney general, David Eby, said B.C.is prepared to sue Alberta if the law punishes his province.

"I think if people totally lose faith in our democratic system, if they believe that the federal government has been able to impose its will, that they've ignored the court proceedings, then I think we're looking for chaos", said Corrigan. Though he approved Trans Mountain, he rejected Enbridge's Northern Gateway pipeline to Kitimat, British Columbia. The remainder are still under review. Five new projects, including Trans Mountain, were proposed during that boom time.

Kinder Morgan, for its part, would not say Sunday whether it felt mollified by the day's events.
