China: Nepal a natural area for cooperation with India

India’s cooperation with China Nepal development plans could help all three nations says Beijing

"I have a dream of travelling to China from Nepal on a modern train across the Himalayas and enjoying the scenic beauty", Gyawali said, adding, "Nepal has expectations on the initiatives to contribute to the development of infrastructure, enhanced cross-border connectivity through railways and roads, promotion of trade, tourism and investment, and people-to-people contacts".

Asked whether Gyawali's visit to Beijing showed that Nepal wanted to rebalance its relations between India and China, Wang said the three countries were "natural friends and partners" due to their geographical proximity.

"Nepal stands as a natural beneficiary for cooperation and development from China and India. I think this is a logical desire that should be supported by both China and India". "We hope that such cooperation will contribute to the development and prosperity of all three countries".

"We are neighbours connected by same mountains and rivers".

"Let me say China and Nepal have agreed on a long-term vision of a multi-dimensional cross-Himalaya connectivity network", Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at a press briefing with his Nepali counterpart Pradeep Kumar Gyawali, PTI reported.

Nepal's Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli, who was re-elected in December, honoured his country's close ties with New Delhi by choosing India for his first worldwide visit early this month, but he has steered foreign policy towards China and its sprawling trade and infrastructure plan spanning Asia, Africa and Europe. "Support for Nepal's development should be a common understanding between China and India".

The visit by Nepal's foreign Minister was seen as an effort to lay the ground work for a trip by Oli to China in the immediate future.

"As two major emerging economies, China and India shall deliver benefits to their neighbours, Nepal included" Mr. Wang said, stressing that China's big plans to develop connectivity and infrastructure were part of the Belt and the Road Initiative. His comment comes after visiting Beijing about a week after Oli was in New Delhi.

But once these projects were complete, it could further yield the emergence of a trans-Himalayan corridor, which could benefit China, India and Nepal.

China is offering to not just link the two countries but extend the railway line all the way to Lumbini, which is close to the Indian border.

Gyawali, who is said to be on a goodwill visit to China, earlier met vice president Wang Qishan at the Zhongnanhai Leadership Compound in Beijing. In an apparent reference to curtailment of Tibetan refugees crossing to Dharamsala through Nepal to meet the Dalai Lama, Wang said Nepal has agreed to not allow its territory to be used for anti-China activities.

In his talks with Wang, Gyawali said both sides comprehensively reviewed transit transport agreement, joint feasibility study of the China-Nepal free trade agreement signed during the previous visit Oli, he said.

Gyawali also requested China to correct the huge balance of trade against Nepal by buying more goods.
