Xi Jinping oversees China's biggest ever drills last week

China's navy is holding live-fire exercises near Taiwan on Wednesday in a warning to the democratic, self-ruled island against what Beijing describes as "dangerous" remarks on independence. The maritime safety authority in the coastal province of Fujian announced the Taiwan Strait one-day drill last week, saying only that it would start at 8 a.m. and end at midnight.

Liu Jieyi, the head of the Beijing-based Taiwan Affairs Bureau said the drills are being carried out to "safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the motherland". It comes after a separate exercise last week saw a Chinese naval flotilla, including the "Liaoning" aircraft carrier, conduct a series of exercises in the South China Sea.

"It is the Chinese Communist Party that has played this up with cheap verbal intimidation and saber rattling through the state media, hoping to create panic and unease".

'It can effectively acquire control of the airspace, and even effectively block the US-Japanese alliance's strategy for intervening in China's plan to settle the Taiwan issue, ' he said.

"That's why we say it's a verbal intimidation and saber rattling. using public opinion to exaggerate the falsity.and playing up an exercise into unification of Taiwan by force".

The drill 'is part of Beijing's psychological warfare against Taiwan, and possibly a means to divert attention from Tsai's visit overseas by compelling media to report on the military drills, ' said J. Michael Cole, a Taipei-based senior fellow at the University of Nottingham's China Policy Institute.

More recently, China has been incensed by comments by Taiwan Premier William Lai in support of Taiwan independence, though the island's government says Lai's position remains that the status quo across the Taiwan Strait should be maintained.

Chinese state television reportedly said on its WeChat account that the drills were at least partly in response to Lai's comments.

The latest Chinese military movements come during a time of heightened tension between Beijing and the self-governed island and follows strong warnings by Chinese President Xi Jinping against Taiwan separatism last month. "Don't say you weren't warned", it stated.

The president and her delegation arrived in Swaziland for a four-day visit on Tuesday, a day before the People's Liberation Army (PLA) held its military drill in the Taiwan Strait. China has ramped up military exercises around Taiwan in the past year, including flying bombers around the island.

Beijing protested last month after President Donald Trump signed a bill allowing top-level United States officials to travel to Taiwan.
