State broadcaster China Central Television reported Wednesday that the Taiwan Strait exercises targeted advocates of formal independence for Taiwan, saying in a headline on its website, "Don't say you haven't been warned!".

China had said the live-fire drills would happen on Wednesday off the city of Quanzhou, in between two groups of islands close to China's coast but which Taiwan has controlled since 1949, when defeated Nationalist forces fled to the island at the end of the Chinese civil war.

Chinese aircraft have again flown around self-ruled Taiwan in what China's air force on Thursday called a "sacred mission", as Taiwan denounced its big neighbor over what it called a policy of military intimidation.

The Chinese government had earlier notified vessels in the area of plans to conduct the drill, it said. The PLA said the exercise involved the coordination of various types of armed helicopters that detected targets on the water and attacked them.

The Cabinet-level Mainland Affairs Council of Taiwan said in a statement issued Thursday that there would be no giving in or making of concessions to Beijing and said the situation was being closely monitored. The drill ended before midnight.

China fears she wants to push for independence.

China's defense ministry did not immediately respond to questions.

China is in the midst of a military modernization program heavily promoted by President Xi Jinping, who has overseen a shift in focus toward creating a more potent fighting force, including projects such as building a second aircraft carrier, integrating stealth fighters into its air force and fielding an array of advanced missiles that can strike air and sea targets from long distances.

The war games and drill came in the wake of the military fanfare and armada staged by the Chinese navy in the South China Sea over the previous week.
