The U.S. Department of Commerce has banned American companies from selling telecommunications equipment to Chinese vendor ZTE after the firm allegedly did not live up to the terms of an agreement that had been worked out after it illegally shipped telecom equipment to Iran and North Korea.

Following the decision by U.S. regulators to impose a seven year ban on exports to ZTE, the phone maker has been uncovered a potential major problem.

ZTE's false statements only were reported to the USA authorities after BIS requested information and documentation showing that employee discipline had occurred, the Department of Commerce said.

American companies are estimated to provide 25-30 percent of the components used in ZTE's equipment.

The United States and China have threatened each other with tens of billions of dollars in tariffs in recent weeks, fanning worries of a full-blown trade war that could hurt global supply chains as well as business investment plans.

ZTE then received a special temporary general license that was extended several times, until it pleaded guilty to the charges in March 2017 and Commerce suspended the ban through March 2018.

One key area of concern is whether ZTE will be able to continue to sell phones running Google's widely used Android operating system. Alphabet and ZTE are now in discussions to determine what course of action is possible if Google is legally prevented from licensing its software. Google and ZTE declined to comment.

It's unclear what exactly this means, as Android is open-source software that anyone can use as they like.

ZTE has extensive trade and investment cooperation with hundreds of USA companies, creating tens of thousands of jobs in the United States, the spokesperson said. "After careful review of the new USA policy, we believe that our relationship with ZTE does not fall within the prohibited activities", Taboola Chief Executive Officer Adam Singolda said in a statement.

The US is ZTE's top smartphone market, accounting for 46 percent of its shipments, followed by China at 24 percent, according to research firm IDC. The proposed ban may also include software licensing that could bar ZTE from installing Android OS onto phones produced that comply with hardware export restrictions.
