A woman has died after a fire broke out in supported living flats provided by Sequence Care Group in Chingford, Waltham Forest.

More than 70 firefighters battled flames at the care home in Chingford in the early hours of this morning.

Before the Brigade arrived 12 people left the block.

The fire took over half of the ground floor and first floor plus all of the roof at its height.

"Smoke is still rising from the roof and a high ladder fire engine is directing water onto the building from above".

LFB station manager Keith Williams said: "Firefighters have been working hard to contain the spread of the fire which has destroyed the roof".

The former Conservative party leader added: "My heart goes out to victims".

Paramedics treated one casualty, the ambulance service said.

It is not yet clear whether she was a resident or a member of staff. It is greatly appreciated.

Just before 05:00, the brigade tweeted to say it was making "good progress" in bringing the fire under control. "It would be inappropriate to make any further comment at this stage".
