Impeachment notice a 'revenge petition', says Jaitley
The leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad announced the move in a press conference after meeting with vice president Venkaiah Naidu.
The development assumes significance as it comes on a day when the Congress and other opposition parties handed over a notice to initiate impeachment proceedings against Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra to Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu. While the Left parties, the NCP and the Congress are on board for moving the impeachment motion, some parties that have already signed the petition have backed out. Opposition leaders said the issue was on the agenda of Friday's meeting. A minimum of 50 MPs' signatures are required for the impeachment motion to be accepted.
Speaking to reporters Congress leader Kapil Sibal said that they had incriminating evidence of impropriety against CJI Misra including a taped conversation of an Odisha High Court judge making reference to impropriety.
"We wish this day had never come in the fabric of our constitutional framework".
Informed sources said the petition for the impeachment of the Chief Justice has been signed by 64 Rajya Sabha members. The motion for removal of CJI Dipak Misra was first suggested in the wake of the January 12 press conference of the four senior-most Supreme Court judges. The honourable Supreme Court called The impeachment motion against the CJI has been unfortunate.

The seven parties reportedly moving for impeachment are the Indian National Congress (INC), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Samajwadi Party (SP), National Congress Party (NCP), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).
It is up to the Speaker/Chairman to admit to rejecting the motion.
A bench headed by Justice AK Sikri said it would not restrain the media before hearing the AG and declined to pass any order. Once it is passed with a special majority (two-thirds of the members present and voting) in the house, it goes to the second house.
If admitted then a three-member committee is formed to investigate the charges.
