An unusually virulent strain of E. coli bacteria on romaine lettuce has sent 31 people to hospitals in 16 states, and health officials are urging consumers to throw out any of the lettuce they may have bought recently. The CDC also revealed that the outbreak has spread to five new states, including Alaska, Arizona, California, Louisiana, and Montana, in addition to the previously-known states of Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington. Thankfully, thus far nobody has died from the outbreak, but the CDC isnt taking any chances, and has some very specific advice for everyone.
"If you can not confirm the source of the romaine lettuce, do not buy it or eat it", the CDC said in a statement. According to Consumer Reports, this action comes after federal food safety warnings about contaminated chopped romaine lettuce. No deaths have yet been reported.
The last reported case dates back to April 6, but the CDC said anyone who has ingested contaminated products after March 29, might not have reported it yet.
"Before purchasing romaine lettuce at a grocery store or eating it at a restaurant, consumers should confirm with the store or restaurant that it is not chopped romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region".

The agency said it traced the infection to romaine lettuce after interviewing numerous sick people and asking about the foods they had eaten and other exposures before they became ill. That's all the information the USA agency gives in that regard as it still maintains that, "no common grower, supplier, distributor, or brand has been identified". Symptoms may be mild to severe, including diarrhea which may be bloody.
Restaurants and retailers should not serve or sell any chopped romaine lettuce, including salads and salad mixes containing chopped romaine lettuce, from the Yuma, Arizona growing region. According to the CDC report, it "was the only common ingredient identified among the salads eaten".
For lovers of leafy greens, these are not salad days.
