Comey also testified previous year that he gave some of his memos of conversations he had with Trump to a Columbia University professor, but that he had written the memos specifically to avoid including classified information.
The memos Trump appears to reference are ones that Comey wrote memorialising his meetings and phone calls with the president - which have since become public.
Trump's legal fate, as well as his political fortunes in Washington, may depend on whether he succeeds in undermining the credibility of Comey and the law enforcement institutions he views as arrayed against him.
Comey, whose "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies and Leadership" comes out Tuesday, worked at the Federal Bureau of Investigation for three presidents - George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump.
Comey is promoting a new book - and incurring Trump's wrath as he does. "No FBI director has ever been fired as he was investigating a president", Stephanopoulos told CNNMoney. He considered that "the most important thing" in a president is that he tell the truth and that Trump "is not qualified for that". Comey, Trump tweeted, "was making decisions based on the fact that he thought she was going to win, and he wanted a job". For his part, Comey has said that nine or 10 months into the Clinton probe, he had a "clear picture" where it was going and it's common to draft statements before an investigation is complete.
Comey's comments in an ABC News interview broadcast Sunday were nearly certain to escalate his war of words with the president. And after Stephanopoulos noted that the president denied asking him to bag the Flynn probe, Comey replied, "Well, what am I going to do?" Comey said an unverified dossier assembled by former British spy Christopher Steele had no impact on triggering the investigation.

But Mr Comey's final judgement of Mr Trump was expressed in those moral terms, and was devastating.

The Hollywood Reporter said the early ratings numbers for the "20/20" special show the Comey interview drew an average of 9.8 million viewers for ABC. Comey said he did not remember consciously thinking about the election results as he made a decision to disclose that the FBI had reopened its investigation into candidate Clintons email use.
It is also not the first time Comey has suggested Trump is not willing to say a harsh word about the Russian leader and hinted about his concerns of having Trump in the Oval Office. Mueller's team is investigating Russian involvement in the 2016 USA presidential election. To hear President Trump tell it, Comey is a "Slimeball!", "a proven LEAKER & LIAR", "a man who always ends up badly and out of whack (he is not smart!), will go down as the WORST FBI Director in history, by far!" who "committed many crimes".
Though the two warring camps continually rehash an election that ended two years ago, trapping the American people in a perpetual nightmare between the two most disliked presidential candidates in USA history, they found common ground in questioning Comey's handling of federal investigations.
