Popular UK chain, Costa Coffee, has announced it will recycle the equivalent of its entire yearly sales of coffee cups by 2020.
Costa Coffee said it will recycle up to 500 million disposable coffee cups a year in the United Kingdom, including those from other retailers to match the number it hands out, and has urged other chains to do the same.
Moreover, reports say that Costa sells around 500 million hot drinks in disposable cups every year, which is one-fifth of the total sold cups in the United Kindom.
There is growing pressure to tackle the 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups the United Kingdom gets through every year, with nearly all of them incinerated, exported or sent to landfill.
Five waste collection firms have been involved in developing the new scheme, Veolia, Biffa, Suez, Grundon and First Mile.
The company revealed the seismic change in a statement today, which will guarantee the cups are recycled by paying paper mills to do so instead of sending them to landfill.

"We have set our own target to recycle the same volume of takeaway cups we use every year and call on other cup retailers to join and help to build a dynamic market for takeaway coffee cup recycling", he added.
About 2.5bn disposable coffee cups are thrown away each year in the United Kingdom, and nearly all - 99.75% - are not recycled.
Now collectors receive £50 per tonne for cups and Costa believes that pushing that up to £120 will make it viable for them to put in place the infrastructure to process more cups.
As well as the £70 supplement, Costa will pay £5 per bale to ValPak, an independent third party, who will audit the system and report on recycling rates.
Acknowledging that "customer behaviour" was the weak link in its recycling chain, Costa managing director Dominic Paul said: "We can't force customers to bring them back".
It would also continue to work with cup manufacturers to minimise and eventually eliminate plastic in takeaway cups.
