Rock N' Roller Battles Gospel Singer for Costa Rica Presidency

They were the top vote-getters in a first round election in early February. The 43-year-old is an evangelical pastor and former TV newscaster and gospel singer who heads the conservative National Restoration Party.

Carlos Alvarado, in contrast, is as restrained as he was when he served as labour minister. The 38-year-old's platform is broader and seeks continuity with the outgoing government on tackling the public deficit and boosting education.

But in the end, the result was a clear and resounding win for Carlos Alvarado.

All we know for certain there will be an Alvarado declared the victor.

But he hinted that he and like-minded voters were tilting towards Fabricio Alvarado.

Voter Maria Rodriguez said she supported Carlos Alvarado because she rejected his rival's homophobic discourse and does not believe the evangelical candidate was qualified to be president.

He said Fabricio Alvarado's ascent was a sign of growing political disenchantment across Latin America - "a situation of loss of credibility for the traditional political elite".

The inter-American court's ruling "was really the equivalent of dropping an atomic bomb on the race", said Kevin Casas-Zamora, a senior fellow at the Inter-American Dialogue in Washington and former vice president of Costa Rica.
