Police say that the driver of a SUV carrying a family with several adopted children may have intentionally plunged off a cliff along California's scenic coast late last month, according to local news reports.

Authorities are still searching for the remaining three siblings - 16-year-old Hannah, 15-year-old Devonte and 12-year-old Sierra - but have said they believe they may have also been in the auto at the time of the crash.

Officials still aren't sure when the crash took place.

The CHIP said electronic data pulled from SUV has helped them piece together the family's final tragic moments.

The car's engine was cold, and the water that had seeped into the auto was warmer than the ocean, indicating that the vehicle had been there for several hours, Allman said.

Investigators said there was no evidence the auto collided with the embankment as it "traversed towards the tidal zone below".

Authorities describe the SUV's speedometer as "pinned at 90 miles per hour", but investigators say that number could have been caused by the impact of the crash. That alone can not be used to determine how fast the vehicle was going.

A Mendocino County Sheriff's Office spokesman told reporters at least one felony was committed, but declined to offer specifics.

Sarah and Jennifer Hart often took their children to festivals and other events, where they promoted unity and offered hugs. On Sunday morning, [Baarts] said CHP could not confirm that a suicide note was retrieved from the home.

The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services said it opened an investigation into the family for potential child neglect or abuse after a complaint on March 23.

The department said it had no history with the family.

Well before the wreck, Sarah Hart pleaded guilty in 2011 to a domestic assault charge in Douglas County, Minnesota, telling authorities "she let her anger get out of control" while spanking her 6-year-old adoptive daughter, court records show. Jennifer and Sarah were a married couple who had previously resided in West Linn Oregon.
