Americans Are Filling Way Fewer Opioid Prescriptions Than They Used To. Here's Why That Matters
"We're particularly pleased that the number of high-dose opioid prescriptions have dropped by approximately 33 percent, although again they're still far too high", said Michael McNett, a Wisconsin Medical Society Opioid Task Force member.

The numbers released by the American Medical Association come from health data company IQVIA.
However, the study does not track illegal use of opioids like heroin or fentanyl, which can replace the use of prescription opioids. "While we have made some progress, there is more work and public education needed to overcome this epidemic", Dr. Gregory Shangold, co-chair of the CSMS opioid committee said in a statement.
The number of people prescribed an opioid for the first time decreased by almost 8% in 2017 - a number that went up by a percent the previous year.

"Prescription opioid volume peaked in 2011 at 240 billion MME (milligrams of morphine equivalents) and has declined by 29% to 171 billion", the study reads. "The emergency room offered me three different levels of pain medicine, including an opioid".
'We get a lot of phone calls from patients whose primary care doctors have said they won't prescribe opioids at all, ' and want referrals to other doctors, Twillman said. It was the steepest drop-off in drug prescriptions for the entire year.
