As an investigation into how seven inmates were killed at Lee Correctional Institution on Sunday night, data shows deaths inside SC prisons are on the rise.
Fights among inmates erupted Sunday evening at the Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, South Carolina and was brought under control at 2:55 am on Monday.
No officers sustained injuries in the widespread fighting, which spread throughout three housing units.
According to tweets from the Department of Corrections, all staff and responding law enforcement are safe and accounted for. The department had initially described the riot as an "ongoing incident", only revealing the scope of the problem hours after its start at 7:15 pm Sunday.
Inmates were herded back into their cells and correctional officers were left to sort through the chaos after order was restored to the Lee County Correctional Facility early Monday morning.
The prisoner who saw the riot exchanged messages with AP on the condition of anonymity because he is not allowed to have a cellphone and fears retribution from other inmates.
The 25-year-old prison houses around 1,500 male inmates, who are among South Carolina's most violent criminals.

State officials identified the slain inmates as Raymond Scott, 28, who was serving a 20-year sentence for crimes including assault and battery; Michael Milledge, 44, serving 25 years for drug trafficking; Damonte Rivera, 24, serving life for murder; Eddie Gaskins, 32, serving 10 years for domestic violence; Joshua Jenkins, 33, serving 15 years for manslaughter; Corey Scott, 38, serving 22 years for kidnapping; and Cornelius McClary, 33, serving 25 years for burglary. One inmate killed another in February.
The fighting was described as "multiple inmate-on-inmate altercations".
"If everybody has an uprising, you are always going to be understaffed", Logan said. That year, two officers were stabbed in a brawl.
Gov. Henry McMaster said these types of incidents are avoided, or kept to a minimum, by rules and regulations, protocol and training.
