Investigators also did not find any marks showing that the vehicle either accelerated or slowed down before it reached
Officials with the California Highway Patrol on Sunday evening said that an SUV that plunged off a Mendocino cliff last week, killing an entire family, may have been an intentional act.
"There was acceleration all the way up until it impacted the ocean floor", Baarts said.
A CHP spokesman said during a conference call with reporters that the SUV's on-board computer indicated that the vehicle stopped and then accelerated over the cliff, a distance of about 70 feet. Investigators say the speedometer was pegged at 90 miles per hour and, combined with the fact no skid marks were seen on the road, that indicates the crash may have been intentional.
Meanwhile, the search continues for the three other Hart children - Hannah Hart, 16; Sierra Hart, 12; and Devonte Hart, 15 - whom authorities believe were in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Authorities are still searching for the 3 missing children.
"This specific location is very hard to search because the ocean currents and tides are strong, it's unpredictable, and the murkiness of the water makes it hard to see", said Capt. Greg Van Patten, a spokesman for the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities believe at least one felony was committed but Van Patten declined to specify. On Sunday morning, [Baarts] said CHP could not confirm that a suicide note was retrieved from the home. Investigators are testing the blood alcohol content of the passengers inside the vehicle, but those test results might take weeks.
The bodies of Jennifer and Sarah Hart, both 38, were discovered inside their overturned SUV near a remote stretch of Highway 1 in Northern California last Monday. Fox affiliate KPTV in OR reported that this indicates the vehicle remained in motion after it fell and just before it hit the rocks 100 feet below.
