Dec's solo Saturday Night Takeaway watched by 7.7m viewers
After the show was taken off air for a week to allow producers to decide how tocontinue, Dec made the fearless decision to host the family show alone.
Following the airing of the pre-recorded sketch which saw the duo reunited, Merchant said: "That other guy was good, you should do more stuff with him".
On Saturday, Dec hosted the hit ITV show without Ant for the first time in their 24-year presenting career.
Presenting the show on his own once more, the Daily Star reports that Dec will be joined by The Rembrandts, who performed the original version of the well-loved song - which hit number three on the United Kingdom charts and topped the US Billboard Airplay chart for eight weeks upon its release in 1995.
After the show, we revealed how he tearfully hailed the audience in an emotional speech, telling them: "I couldn't have done it without you".
"That reception when I came down the stairs.I wasn't sure what was going to happen".
He also said: "I'm glad you enjoyed the show".
The star also posed for a quick selfie with guests including rockers The Script, Davina McCall, therapy gurus The Speakmans and comedian Stephen Merchant.
Saturday Night Takeaway concludes Saturday on ITV at 7pm.

Dec made several veiled references to the absence of his companion during the ITV show.
"But I wanted to say a huge, huge thank you to lots of people here", he said.
"The 42-year-old, who recently confirmed that he is going to be a father, will present next week's final episode of Saturday Night Takeaway in Florida".
Earlier he had joked he had "twice the amount of work to do", and at one point said: "I'll have to do it myself, like everything else this week".
He bounced back and returned to screens for I'm A Celebrity in November and Saturday Night Takeaway in January, but in early March he was arrested and charged for drink driving. "Night y'all. D x" he tweeted.
Dec didn't struggle at all without Ant McPartlin as the live show raked in over 7.7 million viewers. They've been best pals and co-workers since they met on the set of children's TV programme Byker Grove in 1988.
McPartlin will appear in court on April 4.
The two stars will join Dec during the huge live finale at Universal Orlando Resort next week, as he presents for the second week running without Ant McPartlin.
