U.S. Representative Elizabeth Esty
Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (D-CT) has announced that she will not seek re-election, all while she continues to face scrutiny in connection with her former chief of staff, Tony Baker. An open-seat election in this district isn't a lock for Democrats, but Esty insisted on running again the party might have seriously anxious about holding the seat even in a year that's shaping up to be a good one for the party.
"Nearly 8 weeks ago, the House passed the bipartisan #MeToo Congress legislation to address the broken Congressional process", the California Democrat said.
Esty said she wants the committee to "clarify whether there was any wrongdoing" on her part. Esty learned in May 2016 that Tony Baker, who had served as her top aide for more than a year, threatened to kill former colleague Anna Kain, whom he allegedly mistreated when she was his subordinate on Esty's staff. She acknowledged that she did not adequately protect Kain, has vowed to "do better" and has apologized but says she would not resign.

The Washington Post and the Connecticut Post, citing an affidavit for the protective order, reported that Baker called the staffer 50 times on May 5, 2016, and left her a voicemail saying that he would kill her. Esty said she fired Baker three months later after receiving an internal investigation report that revealed improper behavior by Baker that affected multiple female staffers. "Unfortunately, through the review process I learned that threat of violence was not an isolated incident, but part of a pattern of behavior that victimized numerous women on my staff".

However, Pelosi did not call for Esty's resignation and said that Esty "appropriately requested" an expedited review by the Ethics Committee.
Esty entered into a nondisclosure agreement with Baker and wrote a reference letter for him even after learning of the allegations, CNN has confirmed.
