Deported veteran Hector Barajas given US Citizenship
The ACLU had fought for Barajas-Varela to be able to return to the U.S.
Barajas, in tears Thursday, announced in a Facebook video he was going to be granted USA citizenship.
"I'm coming home, Mom!" he added.
Following his service in the army, Barajas-Varela said he had difficulty adjusting to civilian life.
He got the news in what's known as the "Bunker", the headquarters of the Deported Veterans Support House he established in Tijuana for veterans like him. Brown said Barajas "has shown that since his release from custody, he has lived an honest and upright life, exhibited good moral character and conducted himself as a law-abiding citizen". He was deported after serving two years in prison and almost a year in detention for shooting at an occupied vehicle. With his family in the USA and difficulties finding employment in Mexico, he re-entered the US and was again deported in 2010 after being pulled over in a traffic stop. Jerry Brown pardoned him in 2016.
Barajas founded the Deported Veterans Support house in Tijuana and has become an advocate for the roughly 350 other men and women in the same situation. However, honorably discharged veterans - even deported ones - are entitled to come back to the country when they die.
"I always say we make choices that have consequences", Barajas said of his conviction. "You guys know my commitment". He said he did not apply for naturalization during his military service because Army recruiters misled him into believing he would automatically become a citizen after serving.
He was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division and received several military accolades.

Barajas has since devoted his life to helping other deported military veterans.
Noncitizens who serve in the military are still at risk for deportation if they commit crimes that can cause the U.S.to revoke their green cards. He passed the required English and civics portions of the exam, but had been waiting since then for a decision.

The lawsuit was dismissed when the agency agreed to issue a decision by Thursday, the ACLU said in a statement.

Nathan Fletcher, a candidate for county supervisor who has championed the deported veteran's cause, sat beside Barajas on the couch, his hand rubbing Barajas' shoulder in congratulations. Brown to return home, the ACLU said.
Hector Barajas, a deported U.S. Army veteran who has called Tijuana, B.C. his home for the last eight years, will be receiving U.S. citizenship after being reached out by the Department of Homeland Security.
Barajas said coming back to the USA would allow him to go to school and pursue a career.
