The two-time Olympian and 2011 Boston runner-up pulled away at the end of Heartbreak Hill to win in 2 hours, 39 minutes, 54 seconds.

For her part, Flanagan finished in seventh, 6:37 down on her pacesetting pal.

"She just seemed like she was going to be the sacrificial lamb, doing whatever she could to help ... then I just saw her keep going".

BOSTON (AP) - Desiree Linden splashed her way through icy rain and a near-gale headwind to win the Boston Marathon on Monday, the first victory for an American woman since 1985. Nearly an hour into the race, fellow American runner Shalane Flanagan took a quick detour to use one of the restrooms set up just off the course. "It's supposed to be hard", she told reporters after the race. "I'm just very glad that I made it".

Flanagan was even quoted to have said she wanted to win the 2018 Boston marathon "so badly" that she had to resort to reverse psychology in order to maintain focus. In fact, she won by 4 minutes and 10 seconds. "And these are the people that I want to make the most proud", Flanagan added.

And because the pace was slower than normal - due to the torrential downpour that battered the runners throughout the race - Flanagan decided it was a good time to take the pit-stop.

According to USA Today, the 34-year-old athlete from MI displayed incredible sportsmanship before claiming her title by actually stopping to wait for Flanagan a couple of miles into the race.

"For me, these are the best conditions possible", he told reporters after the race.

Sportsmanship among the Americans was on full display during the race, particularly when Linden held back toward the beginning of the race to help Flanagan catch up to the pack after stopping at a port-a-potty.

Linden's victory answered months of speculation as to whether a US woman could win due to a talented American field in this year's race.

"I love this city, this race, this course", Linden said in a TV interview.

One likely reason for the unusually slow finishes?

Desiree Linden, of Washington, Mich., wins the women's division of the 122nd Boston Marathon on Monday, April 16, 2018, in Boston.

Desiree Linden, who made history in the Boston Marathon on Monday, was so unsure of her pace almost halfway through, she cost herself crucial seconds by waiting for a friend.

Yuki Kawauchi passed defending champion Geoffrey Kirui in Kenmore Square to win the men's race in an unofficial 2:15:58 and earn Japan's first Boston Marathon title since 1987.
