Cuban Communist Party stalwart Miguel Diaz-Canel replaced Raul Castro as president today, a new chapter for the island after almost sixty years of rule by the Castro brothers but a change that is aimed at preserving Cuban socialism.
"There has to be a focus on ties to, links with the people - to listen to the people, investigate the problems that exist and inspire debates about those problems", Diaz-Canel told reporters during recent voting for members of the National Assembly.
In his inaugural speech, Diaz-Canel said that his mandate was "to ensure the continuity of the Cuban revolution at a key historic moment".
"I like sticking with the ideas of President Fidel Castro because he did a lot for the people of Cuba, but we need rejuvenation, above all in the economy", said Melissa Mederos, a 21-year-old schoolteacher.
For the first time in almost six decades, the leader of Cuba is not someone from the Castro family. He died in 2016.
Facing biological reality but still active and apparently healthy, Mr Castro is stepping down as president in an effort to guarantee that new leaders can maintain the government's grip on power in the face of economic stagnation, an ageing population and increasing disenchantment among younger generations.
He praised him as a fighter and for the reforms he ushered in during his decade as president.

For many Cubans, struggling with economic hardships and frustrated with the government's emphasis on continuity rather than change, the transition in leader is seen as unlikely to bring much beyond the symbolism of a new leader. "But this isn't the case".
The new president will be the first person outside the Castro family to lead the island since in almost six decades.
