President Donald Trump targets Putin, Obama and Clinton in tweets

Trump was referring to Obama's statement - which the former president later backed away from - that if he saw "a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized" that would be a "red line" that would change the equation in Syria.

Although the USA government was still working to verify the claim by Syrian opposition activists and rescuers that poison gas was used, Trump declared that there would be a "big price to pay" for the use of the outlawed weapons of mass destruction.

Syrian opposition activists and rescuers said Sunday that a poison gas attack on the rebel-held town of Douma near the capital of Damascus killed at least 40 people.

In response to a similar chemical attack in April of previous year, Mr. Trump ordered a missile strike on a Syrian military target in Shayrat, about 50 miles due south of the village that was hit in a gas attack.

"Russia, with its unwavering support for the [Assad] regime, ultimately bears responsibility for these brutal attacks, targeting of countless civilians, and the suffocation of Syria's most vulnerable communities with chemical weapons", State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said. He called on Trump to "follow through" on his tweets from Sunday morning vowing that al-Assad's supporters will pay a heavy price. New photographs from Douma showed the bodies of children who died as a result of the suspected use of chemical weapons. 'President Putin, Russia and Iran are responsible for backing Animal Assad'.

"I wouldn't take anything off the table", he said.

"Open area immediately for medical help and verification", Trump tweeted. Area of atrocity is in lockdown and encircled by Syrian Army, making it completely inaccessible to outside world. "Another humanitarian disaster for no reasons whatsoever. We've seen the photos of that attack", Bossert said.

Several prominent Republicans urged the president to take action - and to reconsider his plan to withdraw USA troops from Syria as quickly as possible.

"This is one of those issues on which every nation, all peoples, have all agreed, and have agreed since WWII, is an unacceptable practice", Bossert said.

Saturday's incident happened nearly a year to the day after more than 80 people were killed in a Sarin attack on the town of Khan Sheikhoun.

Last week, Trump said he wants to withdraw troops from Syrian.

"These are very concerning reports of a chemical weapons attack with significant number of casualties, which if correct, are further proof of Assad's brutality against innocent civilians and his backers' callous disregard for global norms", said a statement from the Foreign Ministry. But he gave no indication Sunday he is poised to punish Assad this time with USA force.

The statements come just hours after the Russian Foreign Ministry had warned of the possible provocations involving the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

'If President Obama had crossed his stated Red Line In the Sand, the Syrian disaster would have ended long ago!' Trump tweeted. "Animal Assad would have been history!" he tweeted.

It's unclear what the administration's next steps are with regard to responding to the attack.

Sen. Lindsey Graham told ABC that this was a "defining moment" for the president.

"If it becomes a tweet without meaning. he's going to look weak", Graham said of Trump. "You need to follow through with that tweet".

Graham urged Mr. Trump to "show a resolve that Obama never did to get this right".
