Pruitt administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency
The White House budget office is investigating the EPA's spending of $43,000 on a secure phone booth for Administrator Scott Pruitt's office.
Pruitt has been under fire for potential ethics lapses, including flying first class, excessive spending on security, and the rental of a room in a Washington condominium tied to an energy lobbyist.
Mulvaney told the House Appropriations Committee that the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) will investigate the EPA chief in light of the General Accountability Office (GAO) report that said Pruitt violated the Antideficiency Act. The law is known as the Anti-Deficiency Act.
In addition to his unique housing arrangement, the pollution enthusiast has had to answer questions about his pricey travel habits; his (denied) request to rent a private jet; his insistence on using lights and sirens to speed through traffic in order to get to cocktail hour on time; his customized S.U.V. with bullet-proof seats; two giant raises he gave to favored aides by manipulating the Safe Drinking Water Act; and his almost $43,000 soundproof phone booth.
The GAO's report didn't delve into whether the phone booth was appropriate or necessary; instead, it focused on whether the EPA should have notified Congress before spending the money as required under Section 710 of a government funding bill.
