Billions of plastic stirrers, straws, cotton wool buds could be banned as early as next year, Theresa May will say today as part of a bid to rid the world of single use plastic. That's why there's going to be a consultation on the ban. The government signalled its intention to work with industry to develop alternatives and ensure a minimum of disruption to businesses.

It's estimated that 8.5 billion plastic straws are thrown away each year in the United Kingdom, many of which make their way into rivers, seas, and oceans.

She said: "Plastic waste is one of the greatest environmental challenges facing the world, which is why protecting the marine environment is central to our agenda at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting".

The environmental catastrophe - highlighted by Sky's Ocean Rescue campaign - sees a million birds and more than 100,000 sea mammals die every year from eating and getting tangled in plastic waste. "Together we can effect real change so that future generations can enjoy a natural environment that is healthier than we now find it", she added.

The news was welcomed by the Green Party, but co-leader Jonathan Bartley said the government "must see these plans through to action, and bring forward the utterly un-ambitious target of eliminating all avoidable plastic waste by 2042".

Mr Gove said: "Single-use plastics are a scourge on our seas and lethal to our precious environment and wildlife so it is vital we act now".

Mrs May said the United Kingdom was a "world leader" on tackling plastic waste, highlighting the charges that have been introduced for plastic bags, the ban on microbeads and the announcement in March of a consultation on introducing a deposit return scheme for drinks containers in England. The ban will also not apply for medical reasons. May also announced that £61.4m worth of funding would be put towards helping other Commonwealth countries fight the plastic problem.

"With the United Kingdom leaving the European Union in less than 12 months, there is a worrying lack of preparation to reassure the public that environmental standards won't suffer".
